How to Check and Renew Your Oman Visa

Where to check your Oman visa status online

The Royal Oman Police runs every visa service in the country, and you check your Oman visa status on the eVisa portal at evisa.rop.gov.om. The link you want is Track Your Application in the top menu, and it works without a login. That matters if an employer filed for you and you never held an account.

A fuller record opens once you log in. Sign in as a Tourist or as a PRO and use the "Find Visa Application" link instead, because the portal states that you must log in to view your complete application status. The logged-in view carries more history than the public tracker shows.

An older ROP form still works if the new one fails. The legacy status page at rop.gov.om/VisaAppStatus asks for a Web Application Number, a passport number and the passport country, so try it if the newer tracker returns nothing.

What you need before you check an Oman visa status

Have three things ready, because the public tracker asks for your Visa Application Number, your travel document number and the nationality shown on that document. You also clear a short text verification, and every field on the form is mandatory.

Your travel document number is simply your passport number. Enter it exactly as printed and without spaces, because one wrong character returns an empty result. People often read that blank screen as a rejection when it is really a typo.

You do not need a civil number or a date of birth here, since those belong to other ROP services. If the application number is lost, ask whoever filed it, because the tracker will not resend the number to you.

SMS works as a backup channel. Send VS followed by your electronic visa form number and your reference number to 90085, and each message costs 100 baisa. This helps when your data connection is weak.

How to check your residence card expiry date

The expiry date is printed on the card itself, so read it there first. Oman does not publish a standalone web form for looking up card expiry, so there is no portal shortcut here.

The ROP SMS alert service fills that gap. Send R followed by your civil number to 90085, and non-Omanis may use a residence card number or a driving licence number in place of the civil number. The subscription costs 1 Rial and runs for six months.

The service then warns you when your civil ID or residence card is close to expiry, and it sends expatriates a separate warning before a visa expires. One Rial buys six months of not being caught out, so set it up the day you collect a new card.

Renewal windows for visit visas work permits and residence cards

A sponsored tourist visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended for a similar period, which gives you 30 further days. The 14-day visa exemption is different, because it cannot be extended or turned into a residence visa.

Residence cards carry a firmer deadline. Ministerial Decision 157/2025, issued on 9 November 2025, requires holders to renew within 30 days of expiry, while ROP's own batch service instructs that applications should be submitted before the card expires. Treat the printed expiry date as your real deadline and the 30 days as damage control.

New arrivals face a separate 30-day clock. Every expatriate resident must obtain a residence card within 30 days of entering Oman, and that clock starts at the border rather than on your first day at work.

Oman publishes no official minimum notice period for a visit visa extension, and the agency sites that quote numbers contradict each other. File as early as the portal allows.

What an Oman residence card renewal costs

Official sources disagree on this fee, so read all three published figures and budget for the highest one.

The gov.om service page prices Renew Resident Card at 11 OMR, and that page was last updated on 5 August 2025.

The ROP residence card page prices the card by term instead, showing 6 OMR for one year and 11 OMR for two years.

Ministerial Decision 157/2025 sets a third structure, reported at 5 OMR per year, with cards now valid for up to ten years depending on category. The same decision puts replacement of a lost or damaged card at 20 OMR. Because the rates differ this much, confirm the amount at the counter before you pay. Online renewal payments are non-refundable.

The nearby fees are steadier. A visit visa extension costs 20 OMR, the same extension for GCC residents costs 5 OMR, and an express visa extension costs 30 OMR. A work visa costs 20 OMR, while a one-year multiple-entry tourist visit visa costs 50 OMR.

The fines that start when you miss a deadline

These penalties are real money and they build daily, and ROP publishes the rates on its fines upon departure service page, updated on 29 July 2026.

Overstaying a visit visa costs 10 OMR per day, and the charge begins once you pass 24 hours beyond the expiry date. One quiet weekend therefore costs you 30 OMR.

Overstaying a residence visa costs 20 OMR per day, but the threshold here is 30 days past expiry rather than 24 hours. After that the meter runs at twice the visit visa rate, and no maximum cap is published for either fine.

A late residence card application costs 10 OMR for each month of delay. This charge sits apart from the daily overstay fine, and both can hit the same person at once.

A late work visa renewal costs 50 OMR per month, and ROP states this plainly on its visa page. An employer who forgets for a single quarter owes 150 OMR before anything else is counted.

Who is allowed to file the renewal

This is where staff and families most often get stuck, because the answer shifts with the visa type.

Tourists file for themselves. You register on the eVisa portal, log in through the Tourist route and apply, and no sponsor is involved.

Work visas belong to the employer. The portal says you may apply for this type only if you are accredited in the eVisa system as a PRO, and ROP adds that a work visa is granted at the request and on the responsibility of an employer. The application must carry the signature of the employer or an authorised signatory, so an employee cannot file it alone. This is why many companies rely on professional PRO services in Oman to keep renewal dates under control.

Residence card renewal is filed by the holder. ROP conditions state that the application should be submitted by the beneficiary of the service, although a first card is different because that must come from the employer or a representative. The gov.om page also requires the applicant's personal attendance at the counter.

You must be inside Oman to renew. ROP states that applicants should be in the Sultanate to renew a residence permit, so renewing from abroad is not possible. Family sponsors face the same rule, as our guide on how to sponsor your family for an Oman family visa explains.

Documents you need to renew your Oman visa

A residence card renewal needs five items, starting with the original expired card and the completed card renewal form. Add the worker data form with the medical test result, a letter from your employer and your original valid passport. Bring the original birth certificate as well if a child sits on your file.

A visit visa extension is lighter, because the gov.om page lists no documents. It sets one condition, that your passport stays valid for no less than six months.

Check passport validity before anything else, because a passport with five months left will stop a renewal that is otherwise perfect. Our guide to the main types of visa in Oman shows which category you are actually renewing.

When the residence card and the labour permit fall out of step

These are two documents issued by two different bodies, since the labour permit comes from the Ministry of Labour and the residence card comes from the Royal Oman Police. They are linked, but they do not expire on the same day.

If the card lapses while the labour permit is still valid, your right to work looks intact but your legal residence does not. ROP counts residence overstay from 30 days past card expiry and then charges 20 OMR per day, and the monthly late application charge of 10 OMR can land on top of that. Renew the card and the two dates line up again.

If the labour permit lapses first, the card renewal stalls instead. The file needs a valid employer letter and a worker data form, and no employer can issue clean paperwork against an expired permit. Fix the permit first, then the card, because reversing that order wastes a trip.

Anyone changing employer should read how the Oman work permit and employment visa fit together before resigning, because the sequencing decides whether you pay fines.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an Oman visa status check take

The tracker returns a result at once, and gov.om lists five minutes as the service duration for the related renewal and fines counters. A slow result usually means a wrong application number rather than a slow system.

Can I renew my Oman visa from outside the country

No, because ROP requires applicants to be in the Sultanate to renew a residence permit. The gov.om resident card page also requires personal attendance.

What happens if my residence card expires while I am travelling

The 30-day threshold keeps running while you are away, and past that point residence overstay is charged at 20 OMR per day with no published ceiling. Return inside the window or ask your employer's PRO to open the file.

How many times can I extend a visit visa

A sponsored tourist visa runs for 30 days and extends for a similar period at a cost of 20 OMR. Official sources do not publish a second extension, so plan on one only.

Is the residence card the same as the residence visa

No, because the visa is the permission to reside in Oman while the card is the identity document that proves it. Our overview of the types of residency in Oman explains how the two sit together.

Rules and fees do change, and the rates above already differ between ROP and gov.om, so verify before you pay. City Squares is an authorised agent of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and handles these filings daily in Muscat. Check your expiry date today and act while the renewal is still routine.
